Dogs

Luc Robitaille was doing just fine in the generosity department. Then came Friday's visit to LA City Hall. The former LA King was there at the request of the council so they could praise his hockey career and the work he does for children and families in need.  

After receiving an audit of the Maury County Animal Shelter, members of the board tasked with overseeing the facility must now hash out how to implement its recommendations. The study, conducted by the Humane Society of United States and paid for by the nonprofit Pet Pals of Maury County, was commissioned after problems led the county to take over ownership and operation of the facility. Originally the shelter was a joint operation between the county, Columbia and Pet Pals, which would run day-to-day operations.

Economic difficulties may be part or the reason for a low adoption rate at the Humane Society of Clark County shelter. Whatever the reason, there are many dogs and cats in need of good homes, and many of them have been at the shelter for far too long. Why not spend some of the funds designated for Christmas giving to provide a home for a wonderful companion dog or cat?  

With the latest calendar from The Sula Foundation, dog-lovers who know the American Pit Bull Terrier as a family dog are reminded daily how responsible ownership protects these dogs. Grover, the white pit bull with the brown spot over his left eye and ear, was once a street dog who was starving and heartworm positive. Now he helps his owner Erin manage the Fair Grinds coffee shop.  

The Las Vegas City Council has adopted an ordinance that will require most pet owners to spay or neuter their cats and dogs by 4 months of age. The ordinance adopted Wednesday is aimed at helping to manage a pet overpopulation problem. Some criticized the measure, including complaints that 4 months old is too young to spay or neuter a pet.  

The Georgia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals---the S.P.C.A..---is caught in a cruel squeeze. The sour economy is causing donors to give less, while-- at the same time-- it's forcing more pet owners to give up their pets. If supporters don't step up, animals in need of adoption may lose this safe haven.  

A non-profit organization based in Knoxville is working locally to help transport rescued animals to good homes. Pilot Jim Carney took time to Friday to speak the virtues of the program, Pilots N Paws. "I can still fly, which I love, and I can help dogs," he said. "I'm a dog lover, and I can help animals get to their new homes and hopefully forever homes."

Warrants have been issued for an Anderson County Animal Control officer and his estranged wife, who's an animal rescue worker. Both are facing 92 charges each of ill treatment of animals. Deputies investigating a report of maltreatment at an Anderson home found several dead animals and seized 177 dogs, a cat and a bird.  

In-Vitro Meat will be fashioned from any creature, not just domestics that were affordable to farm. Yes, ANY ANIMAL, even rare beasts like snow leopard, or Komodo Dragon. We will want to taste them all.
